Core loss (iron loss) is the most critical index for transformer silicon steel quality. We adopted the unified international Epstein test standard, testing mainstream 27QG series grain-oriented silicon steel from five brands under 1T magnetic flux density and 50Hz industrial frequency. The verified practical test data reflects real performance differences after lamination assembly.
Baosteel Hi-B grain-oriented silicon steel represents China’s top-level electrical steel technology. The tested core loss of Baosteel B27QG120 is stably controlled at 1.0–1.1 W/kg @1T, far lower than the national and industrial standard requirements. Its magnetic permeability is the highest among domestic brands, with extremely low hysteresis loss and eddy current loss. The batch performance consistency is excellent, with almost no performance deviation between different production batches. It is the best choice for high-efficiency, low-noise, and ultra-energy-saving transformer projects.
Wugang has mature production technology for oriented silicon steel. The test core loss of its 27QG series material ranges from 1.15–1.25 W/kg @1T. The overall magnetic stability is good, with uniform thickness and stable coating adhesion. Although the low-loss performance is slightly inferior to Baosteel, its quality fluctuation is small, and the yield rate in transformer core lamination is high. It is a cost-effective high-end alternative to Baosteel materials.
Ansteel silicon steel features balanced magnetic performance and stable mechanical properties. The 27QG series test core loss is 1.20–1.30 W/kg @1T. Its structural rigidity is good, and the material flatness is excellent, which is friendly to large-scale automatic lamination production. The slight disadvantage is that the individual batch has tiny magnetic deviation, which is acceptable for conventional industrial and distribution transformers.
Magang and Shagang focus on cost-effective industrial-grade electrical steel. The tested core loss of their mainstream oriented silicon steel ranges from 1.30–1.45 W/kg @1T. The basic magnetic performance meets national standard requirements, fully satisfying ordinary power distribution transformers and low-load electrical equipment. The performance fluctuation is slightly larger than the above three high-end brands, but the cost advantage is prominent.
Baosteel > Wugang > Ansteel > Magang ≈ Shagang. Baosteel adopts the most advanced 20-high rolling mill and precise high-temperature annealing process, achieving zero batch difference in magnetic performance. Wugang and Ansteel have stable batch consistency, suitable for high-standard export orders. Magang and Shagang perform well in conventional standard batches but have relatively obvious performance differences in ultra-thin and high-precision specifications.
Baosteel and Wugang silicon steel adopt high-temperature resistant organic/inorganic composite coating, with strong adhesion, scratch resistance, and excellent interlayer insulation, effectively reducing eddy current loss. Ansteel coating is stable and durable. Magang and Shagang use standard industrial coatings, which meet basic insulation requirements but are less resistant to high temperature and friction during processing.
Baosteel and Wugang materials have ultra-high flatness and uniform thickness tolerance, which can realize zero-gap lamination and minimize assembly additional loss. Ansteel has good flatness. Magang and Shagang have acceptable flatness for conventional assembly, but ultra-precision customized cores need strict screening during production.
Due to ultra-low core loss and uniform magnetic circuit, Baosteel silicon steel cores have the lowest operating noise. Wugang and Ansteel follow with stable low-noise operation. Magang and Shagang cores have slightly higher electromagnetic vibration and noise, which is completely acceptable for ordinary civil and industrial transformers.
The price difference of the five major silicon steel brands is directly linked to their test performance and process precision, forming a clear market gradient:
Price Ranking: Baosteel > Wugang > Ansteel > Magang > Shagang
Baosteel: Premium pricing, the highest cost performance for high-end export, ultra-energy-saving, and special engineering projects, reducing long-term operation electricity costs significantly.
Wugang: Mid-to-high price, close to Baosteel in quality, the best alternative for cost-sensitive high-standard export orders.
Ansteel: Medium price, balanced quality and cost, suitable for mass production of conventional high-quality transformers.
Magang & Shagang: Economic pricing, lowest procurement cost, ideal for conventional civil power distribution and low-budget industrial projects.
